What base weight actually measures
Base weight is what you carry and nothing else. Here is what people quietly leave out of it, and what the same nine-item kit comes to once you put the omissions back.

Every weight on this site is measured on our own scales or labelled with where it came from.

Step 2 of 3 · What you pack for
Pick as many as you like. This seeds your first checklist with the right slots. It does not filter the shop — you will always see everything we sell.

Eight answers, none of them required. They set the slot checklist and the three numbers beside it — and every one of them moves those numbers as you change it. Nothing here is a sales pitch: the checklist is a list of jobs, not a basket.
Sets the pack, and how much food, fuel and water the trip needs.
Changes the shelter, the sleeping bag, the mat, and whether traction is on the list at all.

Where a weight on this site comes from
Every measurement we hold for a product, with its method and its date — our scales, the maker's spec sheet and owner reports, kept apart rather than averaged into one flattering number.
See a measurement recordDan Durston designs shelters and packs and publishes dimensioned drawings for them, which is rarer than it should be. We stock the range because the published numbers can be checked, not because they always come out well — where our scales disagree with the spec sheet, both figures are printed below and the kinder one is not the one we show on the product.
Info
Nothing on this page is paid for.
Brands cannot buy a page, a position in it, or a place in search results. This one exists because we stock the range, and it says what we found when we weighed it — including where the figures disagreed.
| Product | Stated | We measured | Difference | Sample |
|---|
A positive difference means the item is heavier than the maker says. We publish these whether they flatter the brand or not.
Collection · edited by our gear team
Chosen on measured weight and durability reports; the selection criteria are published below, and no brand paid to be here.
Verified weight on file · at least 20 owner reports · no failure pattern in returns data · in stock at time of writing. Ordered by slot, not by margin, price or supplier relationship.
Guide · 11 min read · updated 2 September 2026
And the three things people quietly leave out of it to make the number look better.
Base weight is everything in your pack that is not food, water or fuel — the part that does not shrink as you walk. It is useful precisely because it is stable: consumables vary with the trip, base weight is what you actually chose.
These are the nine items on our shortlist, at the weights our own scales gave them. Put the two omissions back and watch what happens to the number.
Worn weight. Boots, trousers and the shell you set off in are legitimately excluded — but only if you say so. Our kit builder and our trip planner both keep worn items on a separate line for exactly this reason.
The pack itself. Some totals exclude it. Ours never does; it is carried, so it counts.
Stuff sacks and stakes. Trail weight and packed weight are different numbers, and a comparison that mixes them is not a comparison.
Info
This guide links to products, and those links are not paid.
Editorial and commerce are the same company here. We disclose that rather than pretend otherwise.
Conditions these were written in
Reviews carry the conditions they were earned in, because "leaked" from someone who used it once in a storm and "leaked" from someone who has used it forty times are different facts. Pick any of these to read only the reviews written on trips like that; each count is what you would be left with.

Every figure sent in by somebody who owns one, banded to 5 g. We publish the spread rather than a single average, because the spread is the useful part: it is what a second unit off the same production run is likely to weigh.
Most recent
Say where you are going, for how many nights and how cold it gets, and the planner turns it into a slot checklist — shelter, sleep insulation, water treatment — which you can open as a kit. Slot lists, not shopping lists: it tells you what a trip needs, never which product to buy for it.
Plan a tripTwo of your kits, slot by slot, so you can see where the difference between them actually sits. Both columns add up carried items only — what is worn or eaten is left out of base weight on both sides, or the difference would not be a difference.
| Slot | Difference |
|---|
A lighter kit is not a better kit. These are two trips with different lows; the difference column is arithmetic, not a verdict.
From LighterPack, a spreadsheet, or plain text. Nothing is written until you approve the report — the guarantee is that an import can never silently change or lose a row.
Import report
This catalogue has no custom items, so a row that matches nothing is reported and not imported. It is never dropped without being named.
Kept for the record. Retired gear never counts towards a kit, never appears in a slot picker, and is left out of every figure above.
Order · confirmation emailed to
These fill slots that kit has not filled yet — not a "customers also bought" list.
Order reference and the email you used. No account, no password — if you checked out as a guest this is the whole route in.
Newest first. Orders placed as a guest are kept here too; the reference and the email that bought one will open it from anywhere else, with no account and no password.
Choose what is going back and why. The reason is used to fix the catalogue — if three people return a tent because the stated weight was wrong, that is our defect, not theirs.
This goes to the catalogue team and may change the number on the product page.
Free returns. Label emailed immediately. Refunded to your original payment method within 3 working days of arrival.
Mostly, no. You can plan a kit, save it, and buy from us without one. An account syncs your kits between devices and keeps your orders in one place. That is the whole difference, set out below.
No account
Carry on as a guest
Kits live in this browser. Clear your site data, or move to another device, and they do not come with you.
Keep browsingWith an account
Everything above, plus
Anything you have built as a guest on this device attaches to the account the first time you sign in. Nothing is lost.
Two of these work here today. The other two are how we intend to do it and are described rather than demonstrated — saying so is cheaper than a button that pretends.
Info
An account is never required to complete a purchase.
There is no point in the checkout where we stop and ask you to register, and no feature is withheld from guests except the ones that genuinely need an account to work at all — syncing between devices, and order history.
These have never been on our scales: the figure beside each one comes from the maker or from owners. Weigh them and your totals stop being estimates.

Pitched in the open with poles at 125 cm. No sag overnight, no misting inside with both vents open. The offset pitch takes three goes to learn and then it is faster than anything else I have owned.

Flow rate is genuinely fast for the first 40 litres, then drops off unless you backflush. Weighed mine at 63 g against a stated 63 g, so the number is honest.

Accessibility
Our statement, what conforms, and the gaps we know about.
Because we weigh the whole thing. A published "trail weight" often excludes pegs, guylines, the stuff sack, or all three. We weigh what arrives in the box, list the components separately, and tell you which figure the brand used.
Yes. Pitch the tent, sleep in the quilt, walk in the boots. If it is not right, send it back within 60 days. We only ask that it is clean and dry, and we would rather have it back used than have you carry something that does not work.
Not yet. You can log what you own in the gear locker so kits count it, but we do not buy it back.
No, and we are not going to pretend otherwise with a bundle price that is the sum of the parts. Prices are the same whether you buy one thing or fourteen.
No. There is no paid placement, no sponsored result, and no "popularity" sort that could be gamed by buying stock. Sorting is by weight, price, rating or newest, and every one of those is computed from data we hold.

Empty — no kits
No kits yet
A kit is a plan, not a purchase. Start from a trip or add gear you already own.
Empty — no search results
Nothing matches all four filters
Removing under 800 g would give 12 results. We will not silently widen your search.
12 results, on the three filters you kept
The search widened because you said so, and it names the filter that did it. The other three are exactly where you left them.
Loading — exact final dimensions
The skeleton occupies the row's real size, so nothing moves when content lands.
Nothing moved. The row was already its final size while it was still empty, so the price and the weight did not jump out from under the cursor.
Error — recoverable
Warning

Your kit still shows the figure this device already had, and the change is queued. It will save when the connection returns — nothing was lost.

Out of stock. Expected back 24 September — we will email you if you ask, and not otherwise.
We will email you once, on the day it lands — 24 September at the latest. One message about this one item, and nothing else ever.
Undo — persists long enough to reach
It came back at the quantity it left with, in the position it left from. An undo that restores two of something as one is not an undo.
Each absence prevents a class of violation at the tool level, rather than relying on anyone remembering a guideline. These components do not exist in the system, so they cannot be assembled by accident.
| Not built | What its absence prevents |
|---|---|
| Countdown timer | Fake urgency, and deadlines that quietly reset when you come back |
| Scarcity banner not bound to live stock | "Only 2 left!" with nothing behind it that anyone could check |
| Pre-ticked checkbox | Consent and paid extras you did not choose and might not notice |
| Asymmetric confirm/cancel | Confirmshaming — the way out styled to look like a mistake |
| Weight grade, score badge or gauge | A single ideal weight, and a kit that can be won or lost |
| Semantic weight colours | Moralising by palette: green light gear, red heavy gear |
| "You saved £X" component | Savings invented by quoting a price nobody was ever charged |
| Exit-intent modal | Being nagged on the way out of the door |
| Sponsored placement tile | Paid ranking dressed up as a recommendation |
Every photograph on this site is openly licensed and credited below, with a link to the original and to its licence. Images were resized and re-compressed for the web; nothing else was changed. The captions are ours — they describe what each photograph shows, because the ones that came with the files were the photographers' own posts.
The first column says where each one is used. Thirteen ship inside the app without reaching a page, several of them a second copy of a photograph that does — they are credited as well, because the licence follows the copy and not the use.
Warning
These photographs are illustrative, not product photography.
None of them show the exact item they appear beside. A shop whose argument is that its numbers are honest cannot then imply a photograph is of the product when it is not — so it is said here, and on every product page.
Every product in the shop carries a photograph, so the line drawings are not standing in for one that is missing. They are the studio diagram at the end of each product's gallery, and the stand-in for gear in your own locker that we do not sell — there is no open photograph of your ten-year-old tent, and somebody else's tent would be a worse answer than a diagram. They are drawn from the design system's own palette, and they look like drawings on purpose: a diagram beside a photograph reads as a diagram rather than as a product shot.

Shelters / Tarps & single-wall · schema v4 · one variant · not published.
Shown as the heading on the product page, in search and in every kit that holds it.
Tarptent holds 2 other products in the catalogue. The brand page lists them together.
Stored as 498 g, our scales. Canopy, inner and stakes; stuff sack excluded and recorded separately.
Source not chosen. Without it this value cannot publish — a number with no provenance is the thing this catalogue exists to avoid.
Shown as 1.86 m² and 20.0 sq ft, because half the people reading this page think in one and half in the other.
Recorded as 1,200 mm, manufacturer stated. Dyneema composite is not rated the way silnylon is, so it is shown as the maker's claim and never compared against a silnylon figure.
No trade agreement with the UK, so full duty applies on 6306.22. The landed-cost estimate states it before checkout, not after.
6306.22 — tents of synthetic fibres. Used for the landed-cost estimate shown to customers outside the UK.

Claims come from the controlled registry. You cannot type a new one here — an interface invented on a product page is an interface no rule can reason about.
Defaulted from the category. Override it per variant if a size only fits one slot.
All three are present. Publication is blocked if one is not.

The schema decides which attributes exist, in what order they are asked for, which of them become facets, which one is the hero stat, and what has to be true before a variant can publish. Changing one changes the shape of a whole category, so it version-pins.

"Trekking pole" is one character from the existing "Trekking-pole". Two spellings of one idea split the facet in half and make every compatibility rule that reads it wrong for somebody.
Four roles are required in this category. Three are present, and two of the three are missing something the customer needs in order to read the picture.
| Asset | Role | Required metadata | Alt text | State | Actions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| aeonli-01.jpg | Hero, plain ground | None beyond alt text | "Tarptent Aeon Li pitched with a single trekking pole, side view" | Complete | |
| aeonli-02.jpg | In scale | Reference object not recorded | "tent" | Blocking | |
| aeonli-03.jpg | Detail — strut and vent | None beyond alt text | "image1" rejected as placeholder | Blocking | |
| Not uploaded | Packed size | Packed dimensions and measurement method required | — | Missing |
"In scale" means nothing unless the thing it is in scale with is named. A shelter next to an unnamed object is a shelter of unknown size.
Shown to customers beside the image as a caption, in their units.
Between 20 and 250 characters, describing what the image shows. Nine words is the current median across the catalogue.
Too short, and "tent" repeats the product name without describing the picture.
This shelter is not size-variable, so one human-model asset would be enough if one existed. The rule below applies to the clothing and pack categories, where it is the difference between claiming to care about fit and actually showing it.
| Asset | Model | Size worn |
|---|---|---|
| filoment-m01.jpg | 178 cm, 96 cm chest | M |
| filoment-m02.jpg | 165 cm, 112 cm chest | XL |
| filoment-m03.jpg | 188 cm, 104 cm chest | L |
Three body models on one garment is a real budget line. It is also the only version of this commitment that means anything.

All seven open tasks are on this list. Toaks 750 ml is inside the 5% band, so it is watched rather than queued — it is here because the gap has moved twice this month.
A quarter of these start as a customer telling us the thing was heavier than we said. That is the return reason code feeding straight back into the catalogue, which is the point of collecting it.

64 live rules over 38 interface tokens. A rule that reaches customers untested is a trust failure at scale, so nothing enables here until it has been simulated against the fixtures and a live sample.

Six rules of the studio’s sixty-six: the four live ones that produced findings this week, the draft waiting on a simulation, and the one turned off last month. The other sixty live rules have not changed since July — search or filter to reach them.
Each token carries a plain-language description, and that description is what a customer reads in the explanation of a finding. It is not internal documentation — write it for the person standing in a shop deciding whether two things fit together.
| Token | Shown to customers as |
|---|---|
| pitch.pole.length | "The pole height this shelter needs to pitch properly" |
| fuel.thread | "The gas canister fitting this stove screws onto" |
| sleep.width | "How wide the pad is where the quilt has to wrap around it" |
| capacity.volume | "How much this pack holds with the lid closed" |
Water capacity against dry-stage length — disabled
Tom Iwu · "Firing on day walks where it carries no information. Rewriting the condition to require an overnight stage."
Footprint compatibility — v4 replaced v3
Tom Iwu · 412 existing findings keep their v3 stamp
Disabling takes effect on the next evaluation. No deployment, and no findings are deleted — they stop being produced.
Draft v2 · never simulated · not enabled
Fires when a quilt's shoulder width is narrower than the pad it will be strapped to, which is how people end up with a draught down one side at 2 a.m.
when kit contains slot:sleep.quilt
and kit contains slot:sleep.pad
and quilt.width.shoulder < pad.width - 40mm
then finding severity: warning
scope: pair(quilt, pad)
The 40 mm allowance is the wrap the strap system needs. It is a number in the rule, not a hidden constant — so it can be argued with.
Plain language, present tense, no jargon. This is the headline of the finding.
The numbers the finding is built from, in the customer's units. A finding without its evidence is an assertion.
Cannot save — remedies lead with a purchase
The first remedy offered has to be something the customer can do without spending money, where one exists. Here two of them do: tucking rather than strapping, and the extender they may already own. Reorder so one of those is first.
Cannot save — commercial attribute in a compatibility rule
price.tier is a commercial field. Compatibility findings are allowed to read physical and interface attributes and nothing else. A rule that can see price is a rule that can be tuned to sell, and then no finding on the site is worth reading.

A collection with no stated basis reads as a recommendation. If it is a filter, say it is a filter.
There is no ordering override on a rule collection. It sorts by the stat the rule is about. Hand-ordering a filtered list turns it back into a recommendation while still claiming to be a filter.

What the trip planner offers when someone has a shelter-shaped hole in their kit. A set that only spans £320 to £680 is a shop pretending a budget option does not exist.
Cannot save — the set does not span the configured range
This archetype is configured to span £120 to £700 and 480 g to 1,800 g. Your five options cover £320 to £680 and 490 g to 1,150 g. Nothing here serves someone with £150, and there is plenty in the catalogue that would.

Where the ledger does not support a reference price, the "was" price does not display. Not a warning an operator can click past — the element is simply not rendered on those two products. They go on sale at the new price with no comparison.
Scheduled · 4 September 08:00 to 24 September 23:59
26 SKUs, 24 of them with a qualifying reference price. Two will run at the new price with no comparison shown, which is the correct outcome rather than a problem to solve.
This date is displayed to customers, so it is a commitment. Once the promotion is live it can be brought forward or the promotion ended early — it cannot be pushed back.
There is no countdown timer component. The end date is shown as a date. A ticking clock does not tell anyone anything the date does not, and it is not there to.
34 to pack before the 15:00 courier collection. Four are linked to trips starting this week and are already late.

A trip start date is the only deadline that matters to the person who ordered. When an order linked to one slips, the flag is raised here before the customer has to ask — and the email says what we will do, not that we are sorry.
